Process Register template that could help your BPA tasks: Free Download
As part of a large size project that involved intensive BPA activity, I worked on the entire range of the as-is processes (and rules) within the organization. It was a very interesting joint effort by the business and IT team and the outputs from the activity indeed laid a great foundation for the further initiatives in the program, such as BRMS and BPM implementation and overall straight-through processing.
As part of this initiative, I worked on creation of end-to-end process maps of the existing systems and processes, using Visio diagrams, for the modeling purpose. However since it was a Business Process Analysis (BPA) activity, we wanted to create detailed process descriptions also. The following kind of process register template can come handy if you are working on such task. It will have links (numbered processes, ids) to the process maps in the Visio diagrams. Also it will have links to in-scope rules and their ids as well. For each process, it will also detail the defect or improvement opportunity that is known. We may have recommendations for fixing the defect during BPA stage, if there are any, we need to mention those in recommendations column.
Input/output are in descriptive formats, such as application fax, or signed application etc. For uniquely identifying the processes and rules, we can have hierarchical alphanumeric numbering system that suits your project needs. Only make sure the convention is known across the business and IT teams. I will detail out the rules register in separate article with more focus on rules.
